Samsung stays on top for third year while TSMC steps into second place in U.S. patent rankings

 According to the latest statistics released by the IFI CLAIMS (a leading U.S.-based company specializing in patent research and analytics), U.S. patent grants rebounded by 3.8% to 324,043 in 2024 after 4-year falloff.  Samsung retained the top spot for the third year in a row, while TSMC leapt to the 2nd place, ahead Qualcomm at the 3rd place.  

 As revealed in IFI Claim’s U.S. Top 50 patent rankings (the 2024 Top 50 U.S. Patent Assignees), Samsung has held onto the top spot with increased number of patent grants from 6,165 in 2023 to 6,377 in 2024, a rise of 3%.  TSMC moved up to the 2nd place with 3,989 patents compared to 3,687 in 2023, which marks an improvement of 8%.  Qualcomm, slipped a notch to no. 3 with an 11% drop in patent grants from 3,854 in 2023 to 3,422 in 2024.  

 Among the top 50 ranking, the enterprises experiencing strong growth in rankings all came from Asia.  Changxin Memory Technologies jumped 57 places to rank the 42nd, while Tencent rose 54 places to reach 46th and LG Energy advanced 37 places to claim the 49th place.  As for the so-called “Magnificent Seven”, the tech companies including Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Nvidia, and Tesla, which continued their strong stock performance in 2024, only the first four of them held enough patents to make it into the top 50, but the latter three were notably absent.  (Released 2025.01.15)
