Status of IP filing activity at top IP offices in 2022

　On November 13, 2022, TIPO released a summary report on the “2022 Global Patent and Trademark Applications Filed with the USPTO, JPO, EPO, KIPO, and CNIPA”.  Throughout 2022, the National Intellectual Property Administration in China (CNIPA) had received a total of 1,619,268 invention patent applications, while EPO and TIPO each had received 193,460 and TIPO 50,242 applications, all of which experienced a 2.1%-2.5% increase.  The number of invention patent applications filed with other offices remained stable.  As to utility model patent applications, only CNIPA had received more than those of the previous year in a total of 2,950,653 applications.  The top five IP offices and TIPO saw a common decrease in the number of design patent applications and trademark applications.  

　In regard to the number of patent grants and trademark registrations, CNIPA experienced the most remarkable surge rate at 14.7% by granting 798,347 invention patents, and TIPO also had a 1.6% year-on-year increase with 37,175 granted patents.  On the other hand, there was a 7.3% rise in the number of trademark registration grants at the USPTO, totaling 362,597, while JPO witnessed the 7.5%~9.2% growth in the number of granted invention patents (201,420) and granted design patents (29,540) and also trademark registrations (for 322,768 classes).  On the contrary, other offices had seen their respective decline in the number of various granted patents and trademark registrations.  

　It is noticeable that applicants worldwide had actively engaged in advanced technology, industrial innovation, and commercial strategies in Taiwan, the U.S., Japan, Europe, South Korea, and China.  According to the analysis of the distribution of the technical fields of patent applications worldwide in 2022, EPO had received the highest number of invention patent applications in the field of “digital communication”, while the field of “computing technology” dominated in the patent applications filed with USPTO and CNIPA.  Also, the patent applications filed with JPO and KIPO focused on the field of “electronic mechanical energy devices”, and those filed with TIPO were mostly for “semiconductors”.  As to the most popular field of design patent applications at the five major IP offices, “data processing equipment” was the top field at JPO, USPTO, and TIPO, but it ranked 3^rd at EUIPO and CNIPA.  In addition, with respect to the top five classes of trademark registration applications at TIPO and the major trademark offices worldwide, the class of “computers and technology products” ranked among the top three, while the class of “science and technical services” secured a position among the top five at EUIPO, JPO, and USPTO.
