HTC defeated in a wireless communication patent fight and ordered to pay TWD280 million in damages in U.S. verdict

The jury in Delaware’s federal court ruled and determined that HTC Corporation (hereinafter “HTC”), the Taiwan-based smartphone maker, infringed the wireless communications patents held by Luxembourg-based patent licensing firm, 3G Licensing (hereinafter “3G Licensing”), and therefore, HTC must pay more than USD8.9 million (about TWD280 million) to 3G Licensing in damages.  The two companies had commenced their negotiation for patent licensing several years ago but the negotiation broke down before 3G Licensing filed a lawsuit against HTC in 2017.  In the lawsuit, 3G Licensing claimed that HTC’s 4G LTE-capable One, Bolt, and Desire smartphones infringed two of its patents related to wireless communications standards.  HTC, however, denied the accusation and challenged the validity of 3G Licensing’s patents.

HTC said that it is thankful for the jury’s efforts but disappointed with the jury’s decision.  It also pointed out that the verdict would not impose any material adversary impact on HTC’s operation, and it will evaluate and pursue all available measures to seek relief so as to stand up for its rights and interests.  (Released 2023.10.17)
