　Microsoft Corp. has confirmed that they will sign contracts on November 12, 1999 (the U.S. time) for its project to invest in Hoshin Gigamedia, the domestic broadband Internet service provider.  According to preliminary report, Microsoft has announced that it is going to invest US$31.6 million (equivalent to about NT$1 billion) in Hoshin Gigamedia.  This project is also the largest foreign investment project in the domestic Internet business.

 

　For recent years, Microsoft is working hard on launching itself into the Internet business.  This spring, it invested US$5 billion in AT&T and other communication providers.  Before that, it had invested US$1 billion in Comcast, one of the largest Cable TV providers in U.S.A.  Further, Microsoft invested in MediaOne which mainly engages in the multi-media business, and invested US$200,000,000 in Teligent - the broadband Internet service provider, US$300,000,000 in Owest - the telecommunication service provider, and US$600,000,000 in Nextel - the wireless communication service provider.  It also invested US$300,000,000 in GSM - a major communication service provider in the Netherlands, and US$500,000,000 in NTL - the Cable TV provider ranking at the 3rd place in U.K..

 

     Microsoft has a long-standing cooperation with Hoshin Gigamedia.   At the beginning of establishment, Hoshin Gigamedia has highlighted "employing all best equipment", e.g. the Compaq computer and Microsoft's software and network products.  Furthermore, Hoshin Gigamedia acquired through its cooperative relationship with Microsoft the license for broadcasting in Asia the exclusive news of a U.S. major website, MSNBC, and is entitled to translate important news into Chinese version.   All these are proof showing both parties' fair cooperation.
